Christians around the world (Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox) agree that the core of Christian theology (right thinking about who God is) can be found in the Nicene Creed.
325AD, Revised in 381AD
I believe in one GOD, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord JESUS Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God begotten of the Father before all ages. God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered and was buried, and rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures.
I believe in the HOLY SPIRIT, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic CHURCH. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
Amen.
The Nicene Creed
The Nicene Creed was an early affirmation of the faith composed to combat a wide range of heresies and provide the church-at-large with a brief statement of essential Christian understanding.
If you'd like to explore the ideas found in the Creed and their significance to our faith, we'd be happy to chat over coffee. You're also welcome to listen to a sermon series we did that covers the creed piece by piece.
What does this look like in real life?
Ultimately, on any "real life" issue, we believe that we come to know and love God's heart for us and our neighbor when there is agreement between scripture (the Christian Bible), the person of Jesus Christ as revealed in scripture, inspired reasoning (including the Nicene Creed), and the experience of Christians throughout the ages.
